While we like the minimalist design, we think a volume dial on the side would've been nice. The Garmin Nuvi comes packaged with a car charger, a vehicle mount dash and windshield , and reference material. The vehicle mount has a no-fuss design and is very easy to install in your car. It securely held the Nuvi in place, and there's a lock mechanism at the base of the apparatus to reinforce the connection between the suction cup and windshield.
Features As the entry-level model of the Nuvi series, the Garmin Nuvi has a very basic feature set. You can start planning a trip in a number of ways, including entering a specific address, picking a point of interest POI , selecting a recently entered location, or choosing a destination from your Favorites list.
Of course, if you don't need guidance, you can just have the Nuvi track your movements by tapping View Map. The system can generate directions by fastest time, shortest distance, or off road, and you can instruct it to avoid certain road types, such as toll roads and highways.
And don't think you're restricted to only use the system in the car, as there are settings for pedestrian, bicycle, truck, and bus modes. The Nuvi offers turn-by-turn, text- and voice-guided directions, but it doesn't support text-to-speech functionality.
This means the system won't speak actual street names; instead, it will give you more generic directions like, "Turn right in feet. Maps are available in 2D and 3D view with day and night colors, and you can change it so north is always at the top of your screen or the direction in which you are driving.
A plus and minus icon on the map screen allows you to zoom in and out, and there's also a trip information page that displays your speed, direction, trip time, and so forth. The Nuvi has a comprehensive POI database with all the major categories gas stations, lodging, ATMs, and so forth and more specific ones; you can even search for restaurants by type of cuisine. On top of the preloaded entries, you can add custom POI, such as safety cameras and school zones. Of course, part of the allure of the Nuvi series is its travel features.
Again, as an entry-level device, the number of travel tools is more limited than other models in the family. You get a world clock, currency and measurement converters, and a calculator. Other goodies on the Nuvi include a picture viewer and the Garmin Lock security feature, which prevents the unit from performing any functions until you enter a user-defined four-digit PIN or take it to a predetermined location. Performance We tested the Garmin Nuvi in San Francisco, and from a cold start, it took the unit less than two minutes to get a GPS fix under clear skies, while subsequent starts were almost instantaneous.
If the system is having any problems acquiring a fix, a pop-up message will appear onscreen and ask you if it should continue searching for satellites. If you're indoors and tap no, you can still plan trips and get a running demo of your route. During free drives around the city, the Nuvi accurately tracked our location. We also planned a specific trip from the Marina district of San Francisco to CNET's downtown headquarters, and the system quickly returned with a route.
We also missed several turns to test the route recalculation rate, and after a few seconds, the Nuvi gave us new directions, always before our next maneuver. If someone is dumb enough to mess around with games or even watch a movie while driving, that's their decision, and they will have to face the consequences. I rarely drive long distances alone, so having something that my wife can play with in between the long legs of the trip would be great. You mean like one of these?
What a crock, That could be my life there putting in there hands while there playing there little game on the gps while driving down the road. If you want to play your games, do it away from the car. It's good I'd be all for it, if the games worked only when the GPS receiver is turned off, to discourage the few stupid people out there, who might even be more stupid than I am, from playing while driving.
I guess one could play and drive with the receiver off, anyhow, but then the GSP is not functioning as a GPS anymore, but as a gaming device. Wayne So I know a guy at work who has an aftermarket receiver, which has a fairly large LCD screen that ejects from the receiver, and flips up.
A few seconds later, he had a movie playing as we were driving to get some food. People have had the ability to be distracted and kill you on the road for several years now The GPS unit is lacking in features that people have had for several years now. I'm all for technology that reduces the number of devices I have. I can't wait for the day my cell phone can take better pictures than my point-n-shoot camera If my nuvi had some more features, I wouldn't just use it in the car I'd take it with me and use it at work, at the gym, and everywhere in between.
If people wanted to there has been gameboys for 25 years, hand held games, people have playstations etc. I would guess you most likly drink and drive and talk on your cell phone to. There was a school bus here that slamed into a parked gravel truck while she was talking on her cell phone. One little girl killed and the rest went to the hospital.
I know it's not the phone or the game the kills. And as far as keeping my my coments to yourself. I have as much right to say what I feel as you do. So If you don't like them, then please don't read em. Have a great day. Myabe bland personalities, maybe not good at games, or just that annoying old neihbor never wanting anyone else to enjoy their life. On it I also had Documents, excel spreadsheets, Mp3 music, jpeg pictures and my Sparky animations along with many othe programs.
A lot of these games I downloaded from Palm Software. But the unit was sold by Garmin with games already loaded on it. One thing is for sure, I didn't play solitaire while driving or any other game. But I did play the games while using my Ique to track my Amtrak trips.
I could switch between the map and game with a single push of a button. Games are a nice feature to have. They can be useful while waiting at the airport, train station or just waiting in the car for the wife to finish shopping. I now have to travel with both GPSs on my Amtrak trips one to track with and one to play games with.
I briefly checked out games for my but I soon saw that it wasn't on the list of supported units. Ah, well. I would have looked at them but most likely deleted them after that. The type of games typically found on devices such as this - phones for instance - really don't hold my interest.
Why have games on a GPS? Just try to make them better, that all. Having the ability to play games is no difference from having MP3 player or picture viewer on the GPS. I often use my unit to listen to books while waiting at the airports and I would most likely play some games on it too to pass time if that feature is available. Would I buy one device over another because it had games on it and the other didn't?
Absolutely not. Would I pay additional for games for my GPS if it could play them? Playing while driving, or others playing while driving?? I'm more concerned about the person who "only had two beers I seriously doubt someone is going to play a game while driving. I think it's one of those "extras" that can be useful when you are on a plane trip, or sitting in a parked car while waiting for someone etc The less stuff you need to carry with you the better.
Still looks cool though Isn't that what most drivers do in traffic anyways? Seems like when I'm in traffic every car on the road is trying to fit into any available space on the road.
I just call it Vehicle Tetris. But I think that my corniness was established within the community years ago. I feel more like Frogger in traffic. Do you know of many cell phones with a 4. The iPhone has a pretty big screen There are a few, but they are massive and expensive. GPS units have large screens that making viewing the on screen content easy on the eyes.
Playing a game or watching video on a tiny cell phone screen is a pain. If the nuvi and series had games and video capabilities They already have a SD slot Garmin should do a jv with Microsoft to get massive deployment of a mobile version of the Xbox Microsoft has yet to have a mobile gaming platform It's interesting to red some of the old threads.
In the last 5 years we all found new gadgets, new time wasters. So what new things have we found. I would like games on my gps.
