Though there are 3 files named so. No luck in hacking into reg edit either. Both of these are 'optional' updates as termed by windows update. So they aren't usually downloaded by the program, considering the fact that you are using the default settings. Now, download these two updates as standalone packages from microsoft and install them.
After you have finished the installation, go to repeat steps again to restart windows update. Now when you check for updates, the program responds that it has to update itself to search for other updates. Therefore windows update updates itself and restarts again by itself - so just wait for it, might take some time.
When the program is ready , check for updates and you will find that vista sp1 is being offered. Download it. Install it and it works. Sorry for the lack of links to download KB and KB Its 2 in the morning here in Dubai. And given the fragility of the vista platform, who knows what might happen? I have none of the two updates installed, so I followed your instructions about deactivate windows update and deleting the files in those folders. The faultmessage I get for both of them is "Oppdateringen gjelder ikke for systemet" wich would translate into something like "The update is not for this system.
Thanks for the pointer. I wish I could say it worked, however as I've come to expect with Vista, it didn't. Also, before doing an In Place Upgrade there are pre-req steps that need to be performed eg Windows Mail etc other wise they're lost.

When i try to install Vista SP1 RC when the green progress bar is nearly at the end a dialog pops up and says Error 0x and theres a circle with a X in it to the left of the writing After installation it says could not install and reverts all installation after taking more than 1 hour.
I manually tried to install Vista Service Pack 1 which seemed to be working perfectly fine until it restarted. When the computer tried to restart it would not.
