I have run through all the steps in the knowledge base, and have run the automatic troubleshooter, which returns successful repair of issues; however the problem remains.

So they aren't usually downloaded by the program, considering the fact that you are using the default settings. Now, download these two updates as standalone packages from microsoft and install them.

After you have finished the installation, go to repeat steps again to restart windows update. Now when you check for updates, the program responds that it has to update itself to search for other updates. Therefore windows update updates itself and restarts again by itself - so just wait for it, might take some time.

When the program is ready , check for updates and you will find that vista sp1 is being offered. Download it. Install it and it works. The faultmessage I get for both of them is "Oppdateringen gjelder ikke for systemet" wich would translate into something like "The update is not for this system.

Thanks for the pointer. I wish I could say it worked, however as I've come to expect with Vista, it didn't. Also, before doing an In Place Upgrade there are pre-req steps that need to be performed eg Windows Mail etc other wise they're lost.
