Computer shuts off during boot vista

Dec 24, 24 0 4, 0. The other day my gaming rig crapped out on me. I hit the power button, it starts to boot, flashes the "loading Windows" logo on the screen, and then abruptly shuts down every time. I've had a similar issue wbefore, but that was due to a faulty PSU; the problem was solved when I replaced it. I checked it with a power supply tester this time, and all seems to be well on that front.

The mobo speaker is letting out one short beep, as it would for a normal functional startup. I have tried cleaning it with compressed air twice. Most recently today, when I took it apart and cleaned it thoroughly. Now it shuts down even faster, usually before the screen even activates! Mar 29, 22 0 10, 1. Interesting, I have a very similar problem.

PC reboots automatically after a few minutes when it reaches the screen with the time displayed in the lower left corner. If i am quick I can log onto the desktop, but again after a few minutes it reboots. Suspecting a faulty driver I did a fresh install of windows 8.

I checked my motherboard and everything looks clean with no suspect capacitors. Odd thing is that before i wiped hard drive i could boot into safe mode with no problems. This is what made me suspect a dodgy driver and hence decision to do a fresh install but with the same problem still occurring after an attempt to do a fresh install, this cannot be the case. So it appears that this problem only happens when the graphics card is asked to change mode and go into 'full resolution'.

I am now looking at my power supply. My problems only started occurring after my PC took a tumble, the power supply end taking the brunt of the shock. I've just opened it up and it is dusty as hell in there. Everything appears ok, no burnt caps, etc so I am going to clean it and see what happens in the hope that some fluff is causing electrical interference somewhere. Then I'll get a meter on it to check voltages, etc, bearing in mind that these really need to be tested when the power supply is under load Feb 10, 19 0 4, 0.

I had a similar problem some time ago, reapplying the thermal paste solved the problem. Is your computer reporting suspicious CPU temperatures? I'm talking power button, fans start whirring, six Mississippi, off. As far as I know, there is no way to gauge the CPU temperature in that time. Update: after leaving the computer alone for about 6 weeks, I randomly tried booting it last week, and it actually worked. Not wanting to push things, I shut it down.

Yesterday I finally got around to seeing if it would work again. I select it and the PC shuts down on start up. On reboot I get the options again and this time choose repair. It starts the process and then asks if I want to restore to an earlier restore point.

I select yes. It starts to go through the process but then shuts down. So now I cannot boot at all. The time for the PC to shut itself down seems to have gotten shorter and has shut down at different points of start up attempts to the point where it will now not boot. On CD boot, I selected start windows normally. I get to the password screen and it shuts down. On reboot, I select repair disk and it also shut down. Does this sound like more of a software or system issue? Any suggestions on troubleshooting this?

This is a hardware problem so all the tinkering about with System Restore, startup items, etc. You can troubleshoot the hardware yourself or take it to a reputable local professional.

Dominican1 asked the Answer Line forum why his PC shuts itself off partway through the boot process. Try another outlet on the surge protector.

Try another outlet on the wall. Try another surge protector. If the problem is with a desktop PC, try another power cord.
