A faithful rendering of Mary Stewart's first volume of her trilogy of Merlin's life and his part in king Arthur's reign.

I had been wondering if any of these books had been put to film, sadly only this one work exists. It is a good introduction to Mary Stewart's Merlin; an honest man who is sometimes baffled by his own power and horrified by the consequences of man's misuse of that power. The scenery is beautiful: George Winter and Trevor Peacock do a wonderful job of portraying Merlin and Ralf, his lifelong servant and friend.

Merlin did as he asked and later woke to find his injuries healed and his magic restored. He tested the latter by creating a butterfly, then used his newfound command over the crystals to warn Arthur about Morgana's attack. As Merlin prepared to leave, Balinor reappeared and directed Merlin towards a light at the center of the Cave, where he said that his true self would be revealed to him.

Taking his advice, Merlin bid his father goodbye and followed the light deeper into the Cave. He later used his magic to blast his way free, emerging in the form of Dragoon The Diamond of the Day.

Merlin sees the future in the Crystal of Neahtid. The crystals of Crystal Cave contained knowledge of the past, present, and future. This knowledge could be divined through scrying. According to Kilgharrah , the Crystal of Neahtid which was hewn from Crystal Cave could only be wielded by very powerful sorcerers. Decent acting and a rehashed storyline. Was this review helpful? As is the case with Merlin, the producers had a complex narrative question to resolve. There, the early years of the young Superman are a veritable funfest of adventures, and they handled that portion of the story brilliantly.

All the early episodes are in glorious daybright color and even if you are not a fan, chances are the stories would leave a smile on your face. Which brings us to Merlin. By this point in the series the joy of the young wizard who found a home in Camelot and made a friend of the dragon are Here the producers have to contend with the fact that this story is not merely a tragedy, indeed, it predates Shakespeare by centuries and as such is arguably the oldest tragedy that England can lay claim to.

In this episode, pregnant with moral questions and other pithy issues, the characters march inexorably to their destinies. The craftsmanship is still there. It's just not very entertaining.

This show would have no conflict if Merlin just listened to the Dragon.
